For today’s Yuma Sun centerpiece, I took a chance with this headline:
The story is a fun little write-up of The Weather Channel’s ranking of hottest cities. You’re welcome for the PR, Weather Channel!
I’ve gotten good feedback from supervisors on the headline so far, though nothing specific from readers. But judging from the Facebook response to the online article (which features a straightforward, SEO-friendly headline, as it should), the print headline captured the feelings of many Yumans. After all, one of the good things about Yuma summer is being able to brag about conquering an extreme climate.
I have to say it never occurred to me that children might actually burn themselves on playground equipment or sidewalks.

In 1988, 9-year-old Yuma girl Jennifer Wilson was raped and murdered. On Thursday, the man convicted of the crime was executed by the state of Arizona. It’s been 23 years from there to here. I had the opportunity to turn a 33-inch list of the events into a timeline as part of the Yuma Sun‘s blowout coverage of the case’s closure.
With so much information, I tried to keep it simple and focus on readability. Zoom in to actual size and have a look around:
I’m open to critiques!
The case is distressing from any angle. (Having smiling photos of a murdered child all over your desk definitely doesn’t help.) You can read more coverage at YumaSun.com.
